Sébastien Volpe
Founder & CEO of VFX Side Inc.
Passionate about VFX and software development, the journey began at an early age, at 11 years old, with the discovery of BASIC on an Amstrad CPC 464. Since then, this fascination with technology and creation has never faded.
The academic path was unconventional and self-taught, marked by a challenging traditional education experience. Schooling was interrupted after obtaining the Brevet des collèges (French middle school diploma), without pursuing a secondary degree. From 18 to 27 years old, various professional experiences helped explore different fields, including warehouse work, temporary jobs, retail positions (notably at Carrefour), sales associate, and video game sales at Fnac.
Thanks to the financial stability of my spouse, resuming studies became a possibility at 27 years old. To gain access to a software development curriculum, obtaining a Bac Pro Technicien d’Industrialisation en Électronique (Level 4 Diploma) was necessary. This opened the path toward a Level 3 Professional Title (equivalent to BTS – Bac +2) in software development.
After earning this diploma, a two-year waiting period was necessary before enrolling in the next training program. During this time, working as a self-employed entrepreneur provided an opportunity to apply acquired skills. This experience involved building websites and handling database maintenance for various clients.
Later, a Level 2 Professional Title in software design and development (equivalent to Bac +4) was obtained, allowing for deeper knowledge in software architecture, advanced development, and project management.
During the final two years as a software designer and developer, a Master’s in VFX at Institut Artline was pursued in parallel over two years while working full-time. Direct admission into the Master 3D VFX program (now renamed Creature FX) was granted due to self-taught experience, demonstrating sufficient knowledge to enter directly into the program. As a 100% online school, days were dedicated to professional work, while nights and weekends were devoted to VFX training. This intense commitment was rewarded with the degree, along with the Jury’s “Coup de Cœur” (Favorite) distinction, a great source of pride.
After earning the Master’s degree, the decision was made to leave the software development job to focus on family. However, learning never stopped, leading to enrollment in a Game Art program, again at Institut Artline. Another milestone was reached with graduation and a Jury distinction for the best project.
This recognition opened the doors to Ubisoft, where a role as a Real-Time FX Artist provided the opportunity to explore and refine special effects techniques for video games.
A Teaching Approach
Born from Experience
Teaching and training have always been a strong source of interest. Throughout various academic and professional experiences, one realization became clear: learning difficulties are not just caused by the complexity of topics but also by methodological obstacles that slow progress.
Observing the struggles of other students in different training programs led to an important reflection: how to teach differently to avoid these pitfalls and enable a more fluid and effective learning experience? This question led to the development of a pedagogical approach based on iterations, inspired by the AGILE methodology.
The goal is to prevent students from getting stuck due to an overload of concepts or an excessively linear approach. Each concept is introduced progressively, in cycles, allowing complexity to be assimilated step by step without hindering progress. This structure provides learners with a stable and adaptable learning process, enabling them to advance confidently without being overwhelmed by unnecessary challenges.
Making VFX Accessible
Artistic and Technical VFX for Everyone
Today, the goal is to share this knowledge and help others explore this fascinating field. VFX Side Inc. was founded with the goal of offering online training in French and English, making VFX learning accessible to everyone, regardless of their level or background. The ambition is to simplify complex concepts and offer practical tools that allow each student to progress at their own pace.
The courses cover a wide range of topics, including Houdini, Python, VEX, and studio workflow optimization for video games and cinema. Free tutorials are also shared on YouTube, with the mission of making VFX and technical development as clear and accessible as possible.
